Why Patients Choose Dr. Van Horn

Thoughtful care that begins with understanding.

Every patient has unique strengths, challenges, and goals. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, Dr. William Van Horn carefully evaluates emotional health, medical history, learning experiences, relationships, life circumstances, and cognitive functioning before recommending treatment.

Treatment plans are individualized and may include medication management, psychotherapy, practical strategies, lifestyle recommendations, or collaboration with families, schools, therapists, or other healthcare professionals when appropriate.

  • More than 30 years of psychiatric experience

Dr. William A. Van Horn has practiced psychiatry for over three decades, with deep training at the intersection of psychiatry, neurology, and cognitive functioning.

  • Care that begins with understanding your brain

Every evaluation considers focus, attention, learning history, emotional patterns, relationships, sensory sensitivities, and how all of these interact in everyday life.

  • Individualized treatment, not a one-size-fits-all plan

Recommendations may include medication management, practical strategies, lifestyle adjustments, coordination with schools or therapists, or supportive work with families, depending on what each patient actually needs.

  • Expertise across adolescence and adulthood

Care is adapted to the patient’s age and stage of life, whether you are navigating a classroom, a first job, parenting, or a long career that has finally begun to feel harder than it should.

  • Strengths-based, not label-driven

Our goal is not to change who you are. Our goal is to better understand how your brain works, reduce unnecessary barriers, and help you reach the potential that has always been there.

When to Seek an Evaluation

When is it time to seek an evaluation?

For many patients and families, the question arrives gradually. The patterns have been there for years, but the right moment to ask for help often comes once daily life begins to feel harder than it should.

  • Difficulty succeeding despite strong effort.
  • Ongoing academic, workplace, or career challenges.
  • Attention problems interfering with daily life.
  • Emotional regulation difficulties that have begun to strain relationships.
  • Relationship struggles that have felt unexplained or unfair.

A Note for You

“ADHD, autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions are not simply labels — they influence learning, work, relationships, confidence, emotional well-being, and daily life.”

Our goal is not to change who you are. Our goal is to better understand how your brain works, reduce unnecessary barriers, build on your strengths, and help you achieve the greatest quality of life. Unlocking potential, reducing frustration, and building confidence are not slogans here — they are the everyday outcomes we measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions patients ask before calling

  • How do I know if I have ADHD?

ADHD is not a question of willpower. It shows up as consistent patterns of difficulty with focus, organization, finishing what you start, regulating emotions, or sitting still, across many settings and over many years. A careful psychiatric evaluation can clarify whether what you are experiencing fits that picture, and what an individualized next step could be.

  • Can ADHD first be recognized in adulthood?

Yes. Many adults reach a correct ADHD diagnosis only after years of wondering why everyday tasks consistently feel harder than they should. Recognizing it later in life is not unusual, and the right kind of support can make an immediate, meaningful difference.

  • Do you evaluate autism in adolescents and adults?

Yes. We provide thoughtful evaluation for adolescents and adults who suspect autism or have lived with the question for years. The goal is clarity, not simply a label, and we focus on understanding what an autism diagnosis means for you in everyday life.

  • Does treatment always involve medication?

No. Medication is one option among several. Many patients benefit from a thoughtful combination that includes practical strategies, lifestyle adjustments, school or workplace support, and sometimes medication. Recommendations are individualized and explained clearly before anything is started.

  • Can family members be involved?

Yes, when appropriate and always with the patient’s wishes at the center. Family involvement can be especially helpful for adolescents, for patients navigating major life decisions, or when relationships are part of what needs support.

  • How is neuropsychiatric evaluation different from routine psychiatric care?

Neuropsychiatric care looks carefully at how the brain actually works, attention, learning, memory, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and behavior together. That wider lens often reveals what standard psychiatric visits miss, especially for patients whose patterns have never quite fit a single diagnosis.

  • What should I bring to my appointment?

A list of current medications, any past evaluations or records that may help, school or work history if available, and a note about what you want to address. Many patients also find it helpful to bring a family member who can speak to what they have observed over time.

  • How quickly can I be seen?

Many calls are returned the same day. Appointments may be available as soon as next week. If there is any immediate concern, please tell us — urgent situations are prioritized.

  • Do you accept insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice and provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurer. Please see our Cost of Services page or call us for details.

  • Can I attend without a referral?

No referral is needed. You can call our office directly or request an appointment through our website. If your primary care provider would like to coordinate, we are glad to speak with them.
